Purpose of the role
Everyone has the right to access transport. A study by Scope found that UK businesses lose £42mn per month by not accounting for the needs of disabled travellers. A recent Transport Committee ‘Access Denied’ report found that over 34% of disabled passengers will decide to not travel on public transport more than once a week due to it being ‘too complicated’ or ‘unsafe’. The Department for Transport’s priority is to create a national integrated transport system to drive social mobility and regional connectivity that is accessible to all.
Innovate UK Business Connect aims to support government’s ambition and develop a new, complex, programme to work with innovative solution developers, transport operators seeking solutions and disability charities to enable the adoption of solutions and delivering impactful change.
The applicant must have strong leadership skills and be a self-starter with deep understanding of the barriers and enablers to creating an accessible and inclusive transport system. You will have strong inter-personal and communication skills with the ability to identify solutions to deliver impact.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Develop and lead the delivery of a new, complex, Accessible and Inclusive Transport (A&IT) Programme, working with various stakeholders and matrix managing a cross-sector team to enable the adoption of new solutions.
- Create and deliver the A&IT business strategy, monitoring performance and implementing any improvements.
- Take responsibility for complex and new areas, scoping out the challenge and defining activities to meet a defined outcome.
- Work with businesses and charities to ensure fit-for-purpose delivery and impact.
- Ensure a good understanding of developing policies to ensure the relevant context is maintained to support and drive effective activities.
- Work with colleagues across the Innovate UK system on any relevant programmes of work as they arise.
- Be continuously aware of the latest research and information as well as gathering and analysing insights to inform future programmes of work.
- Deliver on key business metrics agreed with the line manager, and to track progress, capturing outcomes and impact.
- Undertake reporting obligations in line with Innovate UK Business Connect goals for impact measurement.
- Lead on designing events with associated marketing, in collaboration with the Reach and Engagement Directorate.
Experience & Skills
Essential Experience
- Experience of delivering impact or driving change in the A&IT space.
- Degree educated or equivalent.
- Leadership experience in transport or charity focused on A&IT.
- Experience of government policies, research and/or innovation strategies.
- Experience in business development and programme design.
- Exceptional stakeholder management skills with a proven ability in working effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Able to produce accurate written documents in a variety of styles to a very high standard.
- Demonstrable financial expertise to provide effective management of project budgets.
- Proven ability to matrix manage /lead teams to deliver on programme objectives.
- Confident in working closely with diverse senior leaders or groups internally and externally, with an ability to persuade, influence and motivate people and teams at all levels.
- Strong analytical, problem solving and collaboration skills.
- Able to identify opportunities and design effective activities to deliver business transformation.
