Revolutionising climate control through responsive coatings

Sian Fussell is the CTO and co-founder of Albotherm, a deep-tech startup developing innovative, responsive glass coatings that reflect excess heat and light in hot weather, allowing buildings and greenhouses to regulate their own temperature without electrical input. Her journey from research chemist to tech entrepreneur began during her PhD at the University of Bristol, where she discovered the potential to transform fundamental science into real-world climate solutions.

Global cooling demands contribute significantly to electricity consumption and emissions. Albotherm’s groundbreaking technology can reduce global electricity usage by up to 3% through temperature-responsive coatings that transition from transparent to opaque-white as temperatures rise. In commercial greenhouse trials, their solution has increased food production by up to 34%. The company is now developing fully biodegradable versions to eliminate microplastic pollution and reduce single-use plastics in agriculture.

“I co-founded Albotherm with a mission to build a sustainable business that leverages advanced technology, to decarbonise cooling in high-impact sectors,” says Sian.

Her achievements include winning the University of Bristol Faculty of Science Doctoral Prize, being named in Insider’s 42 under 42, and securing over £1.3 million in innovation funding. Following successful trials and seed investment, Albotherm has more than doubled in size since early 2023.

“I’m honoured to be a Women in Innovation Award winner,” says Sian. “I’ve been working on our product for nearly nine years, and awards like this provide a powerful sense of validation.”

“One of my biggest challenges was navigating the fundraising process, where female-led companies are often viewed as overly cautious,” Sian reflects. “Rather than altering our values or approach, we emphasised our commitment to responsible, strategic growth – qualities that many investors increasingly value.”

Her advice to aspiring innovators? “Surround yourself with supportive people who bring a variety of skills and perspectives. Never be afraid to ask for help. I’m constantly reminded how generous people can be with their time and advice.”
