North West-based North Product Design (npd), a specialist in taking client projects from concept to prototype and market, has undergone a major transformation in its security posture—unlocking new opportunities in the defence sector.
Since completing a Secure Innovation Security Review, delivered through Innovate UK, the company has implemented robust physical and cyber security measures, introduced background checks, and created a comprehensive security action plan.
These changes have already paid off: npd has secured multiple contracts with BAE Systems, contributing to 15% of the company’s revenue this year. This success will drive a new phase of growth, which will include expanding the team and relocating to a larger, more secure studio.
Why security became critical
As npd began talks with high-profile prospects like BAE Systems, the need to demonstrate strong security became non-negotiable. Leading defence firms such as BAE Systems handle highly sensitive data and classified technologies, where any breach could have national security consequences.
We knew we needed better security, but we didn’t know where to start.
– Georgina Partington, Operations Director, npd
Working with Innovate UK and its Innovation and Growth Specialist, Mick Hadfield, the company was introduced to the Secure Innovation Security Review Scheme—a perfect fit for its ambitions.
“As soon as we heard of the scheme, we knew we needed it if we were going to grow the business in the way we wanted to.”

Improved security was also critical for npd’s ambitions to win additional contracts in the defence sector. Having indicated this ambition to Innovate UK, it helped secure a place for npd CEO, Nathan Partington, in the North West Regional Defence and Security Cluster (NWRDSC).
Supported by the Ministry of Defence, the NWRDSC aims to improve collaboration across the defence sector, accelerate R&D and establish efficient routes to commercialisation.
“Since then, Nathan has spoken on panel discussions about SME contributions to defence and security—and this has directly led to new opportunities that have strengthened our position in this sector.”
An eye-opening review process
To kick off the SISR, two security experts spent a full day at npd’s studio, conducting an in-depth audit across physical, cyber, legal, and regulatory security. The experience was far from a tick-box exercise.
“The conversations were fantastic—they made us reflect on every aspect of our business,” says Georgina. One moment stood out: when they asked, ‘so who are we?’
“We suddenly realised that we hadn’t seen any form of ID. And that moment sparked a cultural shift from an open-door mindset to a security-first approach.”
From insight to action
Following the SISR, npd created a detailed security action plan, which is now reviewed monthly. Key improvements include:
- Physical security upgrades: coded locks, visitor sign-in procedures, secure storage for client documents and prototypes.
- Cyber security enhancements: achieving Cyber Essentials Level one, a self-assessment questionnaire that encourages participants to find weak spots and make improvements. This laid the groundwork for level two, where an independent audit of npd’s cyber security will be completed.
- Background checks: now standard for employees and prospective clients.
- International travel policy: protecting staff and sensitive information abroad.
Driving growth through trust
The impact has been transformative, npd’s enhanced security credentials have enabled it to win significant contracts with BAE Systems—contributing to 15% of the company’s profits this year and paving the way for more projects.
“I don’t think we would be working with BAE without the support from Innovate UK.”

With new contracts in the pipeline, npd is planning a move to a studio three times its current size, designed with security at its core. The company is also exploring ISO 9001 certification to further strengthen its credentials and grow its team.
Looking ahead
For npd, the Secure Innovation Security Review was more than a compliance exercise—it was a catalyst to growth. By embedding security into its culture and operations, the company has positioned itself as a trusted partner for major defence clients and is set for continued expansion.
It was superb. Eye-opening, informative, and necessary for confident business growth.
