The problem and opportunity
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar, ‘hypo’) affects 1.5 million insulin-treated people in the UK. Many experience 100-200 hypos a year. Despite major advances in diabetes technology, hypo care has changed very little. Standard sugar corrects blood glucose but often leaves a ‘hypo hangover’ of brain fog and fatigue for hours, costing weeks of lost productivity a year – a substantial burden for patients, employers and healthcare systems.
The solution and innovation
Klario is the first innovation in hypo care for 100 years to go beyong sugar. Developed with clinicians, its proprietary formula pairs 15g of fast carbohydrate with ‘adaptive energy’ to refuel the brain, helping people feel and function better after a hypo. In a trial of 1,000+ hypos, Klario cut repeat hypos by 27% and helped people return to their day faster. Independent experts have described Klario as ‘a potential new standard of care’.
Market and ambition
Klario has recently launched direct-to-consumer in the UK, while building a community of 1,000+ people seeking better hypo care. Over the next 3 years, Flow plans to bring Klario to multiple international markets including the US, develop new formats and expand its broader pipeline of advanced nutrition products.
