A showcase of quantum-enabled technologies

Through strong collaboration between academia and industry, the UK is accelerating the development, industrialisation and adoption of quantum-enabled technologies across areas such as transport, healthcare, telecommunications, timing, civil engineering, cybersecurity and defence.

Bob Cockshott, Quantum lead at KTN. said, “Quantum technology applications is an exciting space to be in.  The UK alone represents half of the quantum businesses in Europe. Real-life products are evolving such as miniature satellites being developed to provide ultra-secure communications using quantum technology, development of quantum-enabled gas sensors that detect industrial leaks, and the creation of advanced receivers flagging to companies if the data they are transmitting has been accessed by others.  We are looking forward to seeing some familiar faces at this year’s UK National Quantum Technologies Showcase as well as some new ones.”

Cambridge Quantum Computing (CQ ) is a global quantum computing software and algorithms company solving one critical problem – to allow customers to get the most out of quantum computers and make them useful both now and in the future. Their focus is in the areas of quantum chemistry, quantum machine learning, quantum natural language processing and quantum cybersecurity.

Fraunhofer CAP is a UK not for profit research and technology organisation offering industry professional development services in the field of photonics and quantum technology. Fraunhofer CAP is a delivery partner in a significant number of industry projects within the UK QT  Programme and has catalysed collaborations with end users.

Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) is Europe’s leader in quantum computing. With its private Quantum Computing-as-a-Service (QCaaS) platform, OQC enables strategic partners and customers to make breakthrough discoveries, solving some of the world’s most challenging problems. RedWave Labs design and manufacture high quality custom electronics, specialising in photonics. They produce cost effective systems for hostile environments and the most demanding situations as their compact lightweight products are designed to operate in extreme temperature and pressure.

STFC (Science and Technologies Facilities Council) is a world-leading multi-disciplinary science organisation, delivering economic, societal, scientific and international benefits to the UK and its people – and more broadly to the world.  They support an academic community of around 1,700 in particle physics, nuclear physics, and astronomy including space science, who work at more than 50 universities and research institutes in the UK, Europe, Japan and the United States, including a rolling cohort of more than 900 PhD students.  STFC’s large-scale scientific facilities in the UK and Europe are used by more than 3,500 users each year, carrying out more than 2,000 experiments and generating around 900 publications.

The National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) is a new research institution funded through UKRI, which is dedicated to accelerating the development of quantum computing by addressing the challenges of scalability. Working with partners across industry, government and the research community, the NQCC will create the necessary R&D capabilities through coordination and delivery of a technical programme, alongside the commissioning and operation of new facilities. The programme will deliver assured quantum computing capability, enabling the UK to remain internationally competitive. The centre will be headquartered in a purpose-built facility at the STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Campus in Oxfordshire, which is due for completion in 2023.

TMD Technologies, now part of CPI, is a world leading provider of technologically advanced equipment for radar, EW, communications, EMC testing, scientific and medical applications for air, land and sea. Their speciality is innovative, custom solutions for some of the most challenging applications in the industry.  TMD will be exhibiting the gMOT compact portable cold atom system as well as being available to discuss vacuum and alkali metal filled systems.

We spoke to 3 of the companies exhibiting at the event to find out what their aspirations were for this year’s showcase.

The QT Showcase is an important platform for the UK’s quantum community and the NQCC is very pleased to be exhibiting at the Quantum Showcase this year. We are looking forward to meeting representatives from industry, government and the public sector, and speaking with potential collaborators from across the quantum landscape”.
