Meet the Woman Innovator: where inspiration blooms
We know there is more to do to attract, engage, and spotlight more diverse role models and to continue our outreach to support under-represented communities. There is also more to do to debunk existing stereotypes around innovation and entrepreneurship. Through the Meet the Woman Innovator series we aim to do just that and truly make a difference towards a more equal and equitable innovation ecosystem.
As we enter a post-pandemic world, it is essential for us to increase our support and reaffirm the strength of our commitment to the country’s pioneering women innovators whose businesses are meeting pressing environmental, societal, and economic challenges.
In 2021, 38 remarkable women innovators were selected for the Women in Innovation Awards, Innovate UK’s targeted programme aimed at addressing the underrepresentation of women in innovation. This brings the total number of awardees to 118 since the programme started in 2016. These ambitious and inspiring award holders, located across all regions of the UK and now part of our growing community, are working on a wide range of innovations across many different sectors.
From a blood test to allow earlier diagnosis of ovarian cancer, to wearable technology that acts like your own physio, and ‘leather’ made from garden waste, the awardees’ game-changing innovations are tackling some of society’s biggest issues. Their innovations underpin solutions inspired by societal, environmental, and economic challenges, as well as their own lived experiences.

Boosting inclusive innovation through diversity
Without a doubt, there is great power in innovation, and there is even greater potential in innovation when it is led by diverse game changers who serve the needs of diverse communities through their businesses.
We believe in their remarkable ability and in our role to spotlight, empower, and challenge assumptions, which is why we are bringing to you the Meet the Woman Innovator webinar series, where inspiration blooms. We hope that the stories of our awardees and other women from our vibrant community will inspire more innovators.
