Developing high-value, healthy and nutritious foods
KTN and Innovate UK’s Food Industry Innovation 2018 event on 7th March will focus on enhanced food quality and the post-farm gate food supply chain.
With a rapidly growing global population, there is an increasing need for innovation if we are to meet the demand for more efficiently produced, healthier and traceable food.
Enhanced food quality is therefore a priority area for Innovate UK, with particular emphasis on:
- Food safety
- Authenticity and traceability
- Enhanced nutritional value
- Modern methods of food manufacturing
- New/smarter ingredients
- Protein development
- Smarter packaging
Between 2010 and 2015 Innovate UK, working in partnership with the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), invested £90 million in innovation projects as part of the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Innovation Platform (SAF-IP).
The SAF-IP aimed to stimulate the development and adoption of new technologies to help improve the productivity of the UK food and farming industries, while decreasing their impact on the environment. SAF-IP competitions within the post farm gate food theme focussed on sustainable protein production, food processing and manufacturing efficiency, improving food supply chain efficiency and optimising food composition.

Some of these SAF-IP projects will be showcased at a KTN and Innovate UK event taking place on Wednesday, 7th March in at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. Food Industry Innovation 2018  will focus on enhanced food quality and the post-farm gate food supply chain and will provide a unique opportunity for organisations across the food and drink community to exchange knowledge on technical approaches and the latest innovations.
The programme will feature leading specialists discussing challenges and opportunities in the following areas:
- Improving food supply chain efficiency
- Food processing and manufacturing efficiency
- Sustainable protein production
- Optimising food composition
This event will also include an exhibition of the 15 shortlisted finalists from the FIN (Food Innovation Network) Innovation Awards.
