Identification and recovery of high value products from waste plant material

KTN’s Dr Liliya Serazetdinova will be speaking about opportunities for innovation from crop waste materials at a HVPfP workshop on 10th April.

 

The UK government’s¬†2017 Clean Growth Strategy set out a blue print for a low carbon future, which will include¬†more efficient use of waste as part of the UK’s commitment to work towards being a Zero Avoidable Waste economy by 2050.

High Value Chemicals from Plants (HVCfP) is one of thirteen Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council funded Networks in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (BBSRC NIBB) designed to boost interactions between academia and industry. It is hosting a one day workshop focussed on the specific opportunities presented by the application of industrial biotechnology to maximising the value obtained from raw plant waste - from agricultural crop waste to inedible food processing waste such as peel and pith, and grocery fruit and vegetable waste Рand to raise awareness of the regulatory and commercialisation challenges that need to be overcome.

KTN’s Dr Liliya Serazetdinova will be speaking at this event, on the theme of challenges and opportunities for innovation from crop waste.¬†As part of her work at KTN, Liliya helps innovative and high-growth companies within the agri-food supply chain, businesses involved in primary production and processing of plants and crops, companies developing technologies for improving the efficiency and reducing wastage, and those developing products and services for the agri-food sector.

This workshop will address the following key areas:

• An overview of available waste streams from a range of sources
• Relevant regulatory issues
• Industry perspective of feasibility/economics/scale up issues
• Scientific examples of the successful application of IB to utilisation of raw plant waste as a source of high value products

There will also be a facilitated discussion time to address questions and challenges submitted in advance by participants.

The workshop is free to HVCfP members but places are limited and may be restricted to ensure an appropriate mix of participants. Membership of the HVCfP Network is open to anyone interested in becoming part of a multidisciplinary community seeking to improve the utilisation of high value chemicals from plants in the UK.

Workshop applications close 26th February 2018, but places are limited and it may fill up before this date.
