The Boston Consulting Group performed a study in 2015 which predicted that greater cost effectiveness and ease of application and use would lead to robots taking an increasing share of tasks within manufacturing, growing from 10 per cent currently to 25 per cent by 2025. As a result of this, they also predicted that manufacturing productivity would be boosted by 30 per cent.

Europe is widely regarded as one of the front-runners in using robots in manufacturing. In fact, 65 per cent of countries with an above-average number of industrial robots per 10,000 employees are in the European Union — with Germany and Sweden topping the list. However, the United Kingdom is lagging slightly behind. Currently, the country stands marginally above the global average, with 71 robots per 10,000 employees in the manufacturing sector — compared to 300 in Germany and almost 200 per every 10,000 employees in the manufacturing sector in Sweden.

As the ninth-largest manufacturing nation in the world, Britain’s manufacturing sector accounts for 11 per cent of GDP and 45 per cent of exports. To remain competitive in the global market, manufacturers should begin to consider making larger investments in industrial robotics. In fact, a study by Barclays in 2015 suggested an increased investment of £1.24 billion could raise the overall value of manufacturing to the UK economy to a colossal £60.5 billion in less than decade.

Many members of the manufacturing community across all sectors are already aware of the statistics but will be drawn in by the opportunity to meet potential customers and investors.

Supported by KTN and Innovate UK family, The Manufacturer’s Smart Factory Expo is Europe‚Äôs biggest showcase for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) ‚Äì a revolution in manufacturing agility, innovation and thinking. This year, 6000 attendees from technology, finance and manufacturing will visit over 250 exhibitors and choose from over 200 free-to-attend presentation sessions.

We are actively encouraging companies with innovative solutions for Manufacturers to join us in Innovation Alley at the Manufacturer’s Smart Factory Expo in Liverpool on the 14th and 15th November 2018 to meet some of the UK’s leading manufacturing companies looking for solutions in this area.
