National Shared Biorefining Demonstrator Facility Stakeholder Workshop

Influence, shape and guide the development of a National Shared Biorefining Demonstrator Facility.

With sales of over £50 billion annually, employing over 158,000 people, the Chemical industry is one of the UK’s largest exporting industries.

Scottish Enterprise considers Scotland to be ideally placed to build a globally competitive bio-based sector based on the significant existing industry with the logistics, utilities, services, land and skilled workforce necessary to develop IB; it has significant research expertise (both academic and industrial) necessary to develop IB; it has an existing community of companies that are actively developing IB and the UK has the bio-based feeds that are essential as raw materials. Scotland’s National Plan for Industrial Biotechnology highlighted that biorefining facilities may serve as a foundation and a catalyst to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of bio-based industries in the UK.

To support companies to de-risk Industrial Biotechnology projects towards commercial scale-up, there is a need for the development of a single shared National Biorefining Demonstration facility which can offer testing, demonstration and scaling facilities at a pre-commercial scale. The development of such a facility is still in the planning stages and the nature of this will become more apparent after the hosting of a stakeholder engagement workshop to receive feedback from relevant companies operating in the rapidly developing bioeconomy sector.

The aim of this workshop is to qualify industry needs and understand what facilities would be necessary to demonstrate the technologies and/or products of relevant companies and therefore de-risk projects to attract investment.

Scottish Enterprise are pleased to invite you to a workshop for an in-depth discussion with multiple stakeholders operating in the rapidly developing Scottish and wider-UK bioeconomy sector on the nature of the national biorefining demonstration facility in Scotland.

The results of this workshops will be incorporated into a roadmap towards this ambition and will be supplemented with the results of competitor analysis to develop an evidence base on Scotland’s competitor clusters/nations to identify successful activities and policies that could be adopted to assist the development of the UK biorefining industry. Your involvement will provide an opportunity to influence, shape and guide the development of this facility and its requirements to support your business to realise future scale-up and demonstration activities.

The event will take place in Glasgow on the 24th May.  The deadline to register is the 14th May.
