Mission Innovation: Integrated Biorefineries programme

Mission Innovation is a growing global initiative comprising of 23 countries and the European Commission (on behalf of the European Union) to reinvigorate and accelerate global clean energy innovation, achieve performance breakthroughs and cost reductions, and provide widely affordable and reliable clean energy solutions.

Under this initiative the Mission Integrated Biorefineries is an international collaboration spearheaded by Brazil, Canada, the European Commission (EC), the United Kingdom (UK), India, and
the Netherlands. These countries will work together to share their expertise and resources to accelerate the development of integrated biorefineries.

The Mission aims to offers an integrated and holistic zero-waste biorefinery approach to scaling up clean energy innovation for a low carbon sustainable future through a global collaborative alliance. The Biorefinery Roadmap is underpinned by 3 pillars to support the development of bio-based Sustainable Fuels, Chemicals, and Materials (SFCM):

1. Research, development and demonstration (RD&D) that focuses on technologies and processes that improve both the cost competitiveness of bio-based SFCMs and the sustainability of their production.

2. Pilot scale demonstrations that support new and novel technologies and facilitate cost competitive manufacturing of bio-based SFCMs.

3. Regulatory and policy support through coordination and collaboration with government, academia, industry and other stakeholders to identify challenges in biorefining and develop supportive policy and regulatory environments for bio-based SFCM production.

These pillars include 8 different actions, as presented in the roadmap.
The webinar will address and support Action 2 under pillar 1 as outlined in the roadmap.

Action 2 refers to: Research Initiative on New Uses for Biomass in Bio-based (2023 – 2026): A RD&D initiative to improve the resource-use efficiency of biomass and the development of new end-products to support product diversification and profitability for integrated biorefineries. The initiative will seek to support new original research to broaden possible pathways for feedstock use and conversion to end-products.

This webinar will provide an update on the Mission Integrated Biorefineries activities and outline the next phase of deliverables that require input from organisations across the value chain. There is a real need and opportunity to work across international borders to drive both local and domestic activities as we strive to achieve net zero sustainable manufacturing.
