The Net Zero Heat programme at Innovate UK

Heat may be the biggest global energy issue and has been called “the next half-trillion-dollar market” (Michael Liebreich, Ecopragma Capital LLP). Over the last two years, Innovate UK’s Net Zero Heat programme has committed over £17 million to build that market and support the UK’s net zero transition.  Organisations large and small, across public, private and academic sectors, have been developing solutions to breakdown barriers to retrofit, optimise the outcomes and help provide comfortable buildings for everyone.

Opportunities at the event

  • See the progress investments have made so far, with each project team presenting their work.
  • Understand the challenges our innovators tackled, the solutions they have and how they are changing the net zero heat market.
  • Meet the project teams and discuss their solutions.
  • Explore what comes next to get all the UK’s buildings off gas, and how you can be part of the transformation.

Investments in the Net Zero Heat programme

Our programme ran three competitions for grant funding. Project teams will present their work at this online event.  Those competitions were:

Rapid Assessment for Building Fabric Performance:

  • eight projects
  • measuring building characteristics pre-, during and post-retrofit
  • used to validating the interventions made

Heat and Power Upgrades for Demand Reduction:

  • four projects
  • taking building and systems data
  • creating actionable decarbonisation pathways for whole portfolios
  • enabling feedback loops of measured data to increase the certainty in retrofit measures

Design Engineering Innovation Lab:

  • three projects
  • user-centric approach to the whole retrofit process
  • standardised, data-driven approaches to manufacturing, finance, and contracts
  • new cross-sector collaborations

Investor Partnerships Future Economy:

Innovate UK has partnered with a diverse group of investor partners, including venture capital funds, corporate investors, business angel groups, and social impact investors from the UK, Europe, and the US:

  • three projects focused on heat
  • end-to-end retrofit service for homeowners
  • commercialising a disruptive technology for the manufacture of silica aerogels
  • utilising AI system controls and high temperature heat pumps to test a ‘fabric second’ approach to heat pump installations

Additional investments have been made in xRI, the National Retrofit Hub and the Live Data Trust to support and accelerate the route to decarbonisation of buildings.

Hear from all the Innovate UK Investments at this a vital time for the transition to net zero.
