Women in Innovation Success Stories: Natalie Kerres, SCALED
Natalie Kerres shares how the Innovate UK Women in Innovation Award enabled her to thrive in a collaborative environment when growing SCALED.
After experiencing joint injuries, design engineer Natalie Kerres turned to nature to find solutions. Determined to find a way to protect injured joints, Natalie took inspiration from animals like lizards, fish and pangolins, which have scales that move and adapt with the body to offer protection from harm.
Utilising her background in design and her passion for research and science, SCALED was born. The material innovation company protects athletes from long-term joint damage.
Having founded SCALED in 2020, the business had already conducted early pilot usability studies within the elite athlete sector, but joining the Innovate UK Women in Innovation Awards took developments to the next level.
Personal development and overcoming hurdles
By the time she joined the programme, Natalie had already experienced big wins in the developmental stage, but the support of Innovate UK enabled her to grow on a personal level and strengthen her business.
“The most significant areas of growth for me have been in personal development and networking. The cohort provided invaluable support, connecting me with a network of fellow Women in Innovation awardees who shared their success stories, major milestones, and challenges.
“This environment has been incredibly inspiring and has facilitated tremendous personal growth. I’ve gained new insights, perspectives, and strategies for overcoming hurdles. I have expanded my professional network, forging meaningful connections with peers who offer support, guidance, and collaboration opportunities,” she said.
Starting a business is never easy, but with the support of her Innovate UK advisors and cohort, Natalie learned to embrace setbacks.
“Setbacks are opportunities for growth and learning. Developing a resilient mindset has been crucial in navigating the ups and downs of entrepreneurship,” she said.
Pursuing parity and finding funding
Since joining Innovate UK Women in Innovation, Natalie has secured acceptance into the European Innovation & Technology accelerator, Rocket Up programme for women entrepreneurs aimed at expanding the UK’s market presence in Europe. Her experience with Innovate UK and beyond demonstrates what women can achieve through collaborative support.
“I thrive in collaborative environments and am dedicated to empowering and uplifting other women in innovation,” Natalie explained.
“Studies have shown that women-led startups receive significantly less funding compared to their male counterparts, despite demonstrating equal or even better performance. This disparity makes it more difficult for women entrepreneurs to scale their businesses and bring their innovative ideas to fruition,” Natalie said.
Alongside personalised guidance, advice, and expertise from experienced professionals in the industry, the financial support Natalie received through the award has had a significant impact on her company.
“The Innovate UK Women in Innovation Award provided crucial funding that enabled us to execute key initiatives and accelerate our growth trajectory. With the funds, we were able to invest in essential areas such as research and development, product innovation, and market expansion,” she explained.
Ambitions and advice for applicants
SCALED has grown from strength to strength in the four years since its launch, and the expanding team has big plans over the next few years.
“Our goal is to establish SCALED as a leading material innovation in both the sports equipment and medical orthotics industries.
“To prospective Women in Innovation applicants, I would emphasise the immense value and potential opportunities that come with being supported through Innovate UK funding programmes. Understand the programme, develop a strong proposal and leverage the support and networking opportunities,” Natalie said.
