This year’s Regional Investment Spotlight (IRIS) series showcased the vibrant hubs of innovation, growth, and ambition across the UK. From coastal towns to urban centres, each stop provided a unique opportunity to explore the strengths, weaknesses, similarities and differences across regional investment ecosystems.

The University of Salford has taken its first strategic step into structured, institution-wide commercialisation through the ICURe SURfACE pilot programme. In doing so, it is demonstrating that universities of similar size and structure can engage in world-class innovation just as effectively as the UK’s largest research-intensive institutions.

The SARAD team at the University of Salford had never considered commercialising their research. But that changed when they joined the ICURe SURfACE pilot programme, which opened their eyes to a new set of possibilities.

The More Than A Woman (MTAW) initiative is a core part of the Global Alliance Africa (GAA) programme, funded by the UK’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and Innovate UK. Now in its second year, MTAW specifically supports grassroots women innovators in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, focusing on those operating in or benefiting underserved communities, including informal sectors and townships.

The Sebenzisa Tembisa challenge, launched as part of the Place-Based Innovation (PBI) initiative by Global Alliance Africa (GAA) funded by the UK’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and Innovate UK, created a new bridge between innovators and local communities in need of on-the-ground solutions in South Africa. Following community consultations, waste management was identified as a critical challenge for local households and businesses. The strong local buy-in led to the successful delivery of three pilot projects offering sustainable, circular economy solutions.
