New guides on global AI policies published
The Innovate UK BridgeAI programme, a pioneering initiative driving the future adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) has published two comprehensive documents detailing AI policies across the world. The guides summarise the United Kingdom’s AI governance model and the European Union’s approach to AI regulation. This release is timely, following the recent AI Safety Summit held in early November, providing crucial insights to help AI pioneers understand the current regulatory and policy landscape amidst the ongoing transformation of industries.
UK AI policy: a pro-innovation approach
The UK’s approach summarised in the guide showcases how, unlike traditional models, the UK is seeking to focus on outcomes rather than rigid technological classifications. Regulators, including the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), are empowered to regulate AI applications in their sectors ensuring safety, security, and fairness.
Underpinning this approach are five core principles: safety, transparency, fairness, accountability, and contestability. These principles form the bedrock of AI governance, ensuring that AI systems function securely, transparently, and ethically. To bolster trust, the UK government is engaging with industry and regulators, fostering collaboration to drive innovation.
European AI policy: pioneering harmonisation
In tandem with UK policy, the European Union’s AI regulatory framework known as the EU AI Act is seeking to establish technology-neutral definitions and classifications of AI systems, heralding a new era in harmonised AI governance. The Act categorises AI systems based on their risks, distinguishing unacceptable, high-risk, limited-risk, and minimal-risk practices.
Crucially, the EU AI Act emphasises transparency and accountability. Providers of high-risk AI systems are mandated to conduct conformity assessments, ensuring compliance with essential requirements and technical standards. This rigorous process guarantees the robustness and safety of AI solutions, instilling confidence in businesses and consumers alike.
The BridgeAI advantage: navigating the AI landscape
For businesses and innovators navigating the complex AI landscape, these policy documents offer invaluable guidance. By adhering to the principles outlined in both the UK and European AI policies, companies can ensure their AI systems are not only cutting-edge but also ethical and responsible. The documents provide a roadmap, empowering businesses to innovate with confidence, knowing they are operating within the bounds of progressive regulation.
