The European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry, the University of Bristol, and the Knowledge Exchange Hub for Mathematical Sciences are seeking partners from business, industry, and government for the 187th European Study Group with Industry (ESGI) workshop to be held at the University of Bristol between the 14th and 18th of July 2025. The ESGI is a five-day workshop that brings together mathematical and data scientists and partners from business, industry, and government. Partners present a pressing problem they are currently facing, and mathematical and data scientists work on finding a solution. ESGIs are internationally recognised as a cost-effective means of making real progress on current challenges in just a few days. The format for the event will be as follows:

  • On the opening day, each participating organisation presents a technical challenge to an audience of the participants.
  • The participating mathematical and data scientists then split into groups and for the next three days work closely with the relevant external partner to brainstorm ideas, model scenarios, and problem solve.
  • On the final day, each group presents their progress and recommends actions based on the results of the week’s work.
  • After the meeting, appropriate deliverables from the week will be made available to the organisation typically in the form of a technical report. Interested parties are invited to browse the Mathematics in Industry Repository for examples of previous projects.

In principle, there are no limits to the problems that can be tackled by mathematical modelling and data science. We anticipate that over 70 scientists from across the UK and Europe will participate in the event, with expertise spanning physical applied mathematics, statistical modelling, machine learning and artificial intelligence, and scientific computing.

There is a fee associated with bringing a problem to the Study Group that helps to defray the costs of the meeting. Where such costs would prevent a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME), charity or other similar organisation participating there may be the potential for financial assistance to help cover the costs. If you think this may apply to you, please contact the event organisers. History tells us that organisations benefit from fresh perspectives and new ideas, alongside lasting and productive collaborations with researchers that emerge from the event. Thus, if your problem is selected, we hope that a representative of your organisation can attend as much of the week as possible.

If you are interested in finding out more about ESGI and would like to propose a problem for the event, please complete the following pro-forma and one of the organisers will be in touch as soon as possible.
