Relationships are infrastructure for innovation

An innovation ecosystem is defined by who is in the room and how deliberately people and organisations are connected.

High-performing ecosystems require programmes, funding and support organisations that are deeply integrated. Without movement between these entities, activity remains fragmented.

Relationships are the infrastructure that makes that movement work.

Innovate UK Business Connect attended CLIMB26. The day brought together founders, investors, universities and public-sector partners. Its value came from the routes created between them.

Why capital alone doesn’t create growth

Funding is only one part of the scale-up journey. Founders need evidence that strengthens the case for investment. Investors need credible opportunities with clear commercial potential. Universities and researchers need practical routes to commercialisation.

A region with active investors and multiple support programmes still underperforms when founders cannot navigate between them.

Connections create investability by giving founders access to expertise, customers and commercial insight, while giving investors better evidence and stronger pipelines.

Structured networking and curated discussions create opportunities for investors and founders to meet people they would be unlikely to encounter through their existing networks. Activities such as investor speed networking and facilitated roundtables can accelerate introductions, surface investment opportunities and create the foundations for future collaboration.

The point of this work is the follow-on action created by targeted connection-building. Relationships help build pipelines, test opportunities and move potential collaborations beyond the event.

Relationships as infrastructure

Relationships operate as economic infrastructure because they create routes through the system.

Transport links move people and goods. Digital networks move information. Relationships perform the same practical function for innovation.

The University Commercialisation roundtable showed this clearly. A promising research asset or strong intellectual property is rarely enough. Research-led ventures require market validation, customer evidence, a credible commercial model, founding capability and investor confidence.
Commercialisation works better as a network than a linear pipeline.

The regional scale-up discussion focused on a similar problem: support exists, but routes through it remain fragmented. Founders need clear pathways between support, growth capital, research capability, talent and commercial partnerships.

When those routes are unclear, founders miss opportunities, investors miss credible deals, and partnerships fail to form.

Measuring what matters

Many organisations measure activity metrics because they are easy to count. Funding secured, attendance figures and programme participation rates all have value, but they do not show how well an ecosystem works.

A stronger measure is movement through the system.

Useful measures track meaningful introductions, follow-on action, new partnerships and improved access to investors, partners and customers.

The practical value of regional events and activity come from structured opportunities designed to create follow-on action. Investor speed networking helps founders clarify funding routes and identify appropriate next steps.

The investor lunch opened a regional conversation about impact investment in Yorkshire. These relationships reduce friction, improve information flow and create visibility for opportunities moving through the system.

An introduction can develop into an investment conversation. A roundtable discussion develops into a partnership.

That delayed value is one reason relationship-building is underestimated. It is harder to measure than metrics such as attendance, but more important to how an ecosystem functions.

We need to keep building

High-performing ecosystems require capital, clear routes, active relationships and trust. Relationships are part of the operating infrastructure of innovation, not a secondary benefit of events or programmes.

Events and structured networking opportunities create value when they build connections that outlast the event. For Innovate UK Business Connect, we make the system easier to navigate, easier to connect and better able to turn opportunity into follow-on action.
