Project Overview

The Museums in the Metaverse project is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at bringing the vast cultural heritage of Scotland into the virtual world.

It’s a two-sided platform that empowers online visitors to explore cultural assets in new engaging ways using XR technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to provide immersive experiences for visitors.

Users will be able to explore virtual replicas of museums, sites, and objects, gaining access to collections that might otherwise be inaccessible. The platform will allow users to create their own virtual museums and tell their own stories with objects from around the world. The project also aims to provide educational resources and experiences for learners of all ages.

Funding and Partners

The £2.1m project is funded by the UK Government’s Innovation Accelerator program and is led by the University of Glasgow in partnership with Edify, Historic Environment Scotland and the National Museums Scotland. By bringing cultural heritage into the digital realm, the project aims to support sustainable economic and cultural growth.
