Aligning economic, natural and environmental goals in the South Downs National Park
The South Downs National Park is vital to both nature and the economy. It is home to over 8,000 businesses and attracts nearly 19 million visitors a year. But as the highest-emitting national park in the UK, its emissions could be threatening the very landscape that local livelihoods rely on.
The Pathfinder Parks project is helping to address this challenge. With support from South Downs National Park Authority and Innovate UK funding, partners are using the OnePlanet platform to help councils, land managers, businesses and communities align their plans around shared outcomes. This makes it easier to coordinate efforts, support collaboration and strengthen regional action.
The model is now being applied at the national level. Working with the Cabinet Office, OnePlanet has tested how this systems approach can connect local, regional and national strategies in a way that is joined up, evidence-based and informed by citizen perspectives.
