Embedding climate thinking to improve council delivery in Wakefield
Wakefield Council is embedding climate thinking into the way it operates, starting with the core systems of procurement, finance and strategy. By tackling internal, non-technological barriers, the council is ensuring climate action becomes a driver of more effective, agile public services.
With support from Innovate UK, a cross-departmental change programme is underway, shaped by elected members, directors, senior officers and the Climate Change Team.
Tools like a Climate Impact Assessment (CIA), Strategic Forward Planner, and Strategic Assessment Framework are helping teams integrate Net Zero principles into everyday decision-making.
The council’s GREENER transformation plan sets out a five-year roadmap for reducing emissions while delivering broader environmental, economic and social benefits. Work is also underway to engage citizens, develop climate champions and explore investment enablers like local energy hubs.
Wakefield is showing how councils can lead by transforming the way they work from the inside out.
