Deploying sensors in manholes to provide proactive flood management
Serial innovator Will Dubin is an engineer turned entrepreneur. With multiple small businesses already under his belt, he’s now changed path to start a clean-tech business.
As Will explains, the UK’s wastewater network is subjected to over 300,000 blockages and almost 40,000 floods per year. Climate change, urbanisation and the ageing of existing infrastructure make wastewater floods more likely than ever.
After falling victim to a wastewater flood during university, Will discovered how outdated the network is. He started ManholeMetrics, which uses sensors in manholes and analytics to monitor wastewater levels. This will provide proactive flood management before the damage is done.
The business is supported by water companies including Thames Water and Yorkshire Water, and Will plans to deploy a number of sensors for field trials in the next few months.
“I’m excited to take advantage of all that the Young Innovators programme will offer! Receiving backing from the government via Innovate UK is a real feather in the cap. It provides further validation of the importance of the issue we’re addressing and the merits of our solution,” Will says.
