The problem and opportunity
Fossil-fuel-derived polymer foams (EPS, etc.) dominate packaging and insulation, driving over ~35 Mt CO2e/year and heavy waste impacts. Manufacturers face tightening regulations, and consumers are increasingly aware of ecosystems damaged by microplastics. Existing “green” alternatives (PLA, mycelium, cellulose) can’t match cost, performance, and scalability together – leaving a gap in the market for a low carbon, easily scalable alternative.
The solution and innovation
Carbon Cell compounds carbon-negative biochar with natural polymers into pellets which can be expanded into foam that meets customer demands for thermal and mechanical performance. The manufacturing process allows compatibility with existing foam production equipment, enabling scalable adoption. Validated to TRL6, with 3 successful deployments across acoustics, packaging, and horticulture, demonstrating real market traction and growth potential.
Market and ambition
Carbon Cell targets the $95.6B foam market, entering via specialty packaging before expanding into acoustic and thermal insulation. Early traction includes 8 manufacturing partners, 3 delivered projects, and £1.8m raised in equity/grants. EOY28 production forecast at 300+ tonnes/year; approx. £9m potential revenue.
Founder perspective
Elizabeth Lee is a design engineer with a dual master’s from Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art, where she developed a deep focus on materiality—working hands-on with biomaterials and sustainable manufacturing processes. Driven by climate urgency, she pairs this technical grounding with over 12 years’ experience bringing products to market.
