What is New Designers?
New Designers is the UK’s leading design showcase event, where thousands of people come together to champion the future of design and collectively discuss creative new ideas. This event presents the work of 2,500 of this year’s best graduating design talent from 200 flagship university design courses around the UK.
New Designers takes place at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London and is staged over two weeks: 29 June to 2 July, and 6 to 9 July. This event enables networking and collaboration between industry, employers and graduates across a range of disciplines from textiles, jewellery and ceramics to industrial product design, transport and animation. Innovate UK KTN New Designers Talks Programme
With our London office based in the heart of the Business Design Centre where New Designers takes place, we will be active throughout the second week of the Show. Below are details of Innovate UK KTN hosted talks and panel discussions which you can attend online or in-person while visiting New Designers. Sustainability in design online panel discussion (Wednesday 22 June, 16:00 – 17:00)
This online talk will focus on the impact of fast consumption on the planet, and how design can help to address this by influencing behaviours and extending product lifetimes. The panel will feature Emma McKenna, Head of Net Zero, Innovate UK KTN along with Consumer Sector Manager Dai Sanders from DCA Design International and Rich Gilbert, Co-Founder of The Agency of Design. KTP – Opportunities for design graduates (Thursday 7 July 2022, 15:00 – 15:45)
Mark Lynch, Design Engineer & KTP Knowledge Transfer Advisor at Innovate UK KTN will discuss KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) graduate career opportunities which help small and large companies to innovate and grow.
Diversity and inclusion in the design community (Friday 8 July 2022, 13:45 – 14:45)
During this panel discussion, Abi Hird, Design Innovation Network Lead at Innovate UK KTN will share the newly published Inclusive Design Toolkit. The panel, which includes experts with experience working at McLaren, Ford, Lotus, Heatherwick and Tosho & Co will then discuss diversity and inclusion within the design community.
Materials and design forum (Friday 8 July, 16:15 – 16:45)
During this talk, the Innovate UK KTN materials team will discuss highlights from the MaDE materials clinic at New Designers 2022 and share their views on the role of materials in design-led innovation. The panel includes Dr Neelam Mughal, Knowledge Transfer Manager for Advanced Materials; Dr Robert Quarshie, Head of Materials & Chair of Materials and Design Exchange (MaDE) and Noha Abu El Magd, Functional Materials Knowledge Transfer Manager.
