Closely aligned to UK AI strategy, as part of the BridgeAI programme, this series plays a vital role in positioning the UK as a global leader in AI and empowering organisations to adopt AI ethically.

Tailored for industries such as agriculture, construction, creative industries, and transport, Ignite Labs x BridgeAI is a comprehensive six-week programme where a cohort of 50 innovators gained access to invaluable knowledge, resources, and expert guidance to navigate the world of AI and determine how and when to implement it in their businesses.

• Fatima Garcia: Data Scientist at DataCity

Fatima’s expertise in human rights and data science provides a unique perspective on the ethical implications of using large datasets. With a focus on sourcing data responsibly and considering the impact on marginalised groups, Fatima emphasises the need for inclusive representation in AI-generated data.

• Sherin Mathew: CEO of AI Tech UK and Founder of Smart Ethics

Sherin’s mission to make ethics accessible to all drives his work in building an ethical culture. By fostering collaboration and providing practical frameworks, Sherin aims to enable businesses to integrate ethics into their AI practices, leading to cost savings, time efficiency, and enhanced user trust.

• Chris Hicks: Co-Lead, AI for Cyber Defence Research Centre at The Alan Turing Institute

Chris specialises in solving computer security and privacy challenges through autonomous decision-making. By leveraging deep reinforcement learning, Chris aims to revolutionise the field of computer security while aligning research with societal and economic impact.

• Toby Lewis: Global Head of Threat Analysis at Darktrace

During the Q&A session, the panellists addressed crucial questions surrounding ethical AI practices. Here are some key takeaways:

1. Ethical Implications of AI-Generated Data: Fatima highlighted the advantages and limitations of using AI-generated data. Advantages included being able to receive data sets that have not been available before, for instance, it was not possible to get data on all the companies currently using AI, but now that is possible. Limitations included the important fact that data is never perfect and as AI-generated data is on a much larger scale, it can be difficult to interpret. Ethically, if we are using AI to mine data from text, we are likely to leave some blind spots as well. She stressed the importance of maintaining a human element in the data interpretation process to avoid biased outcomes and ensure inclusive representation.
2. Embedding Data Security and Ethics for Start-ups: Sherin emphasised the importance of embedding data security and ethics from the early stages of AI implementation. Start-ups should prioritise building a strong foundation of ethical practices, ensuring transparency in data collection and usage, and fostering a culture of responsible AI throughout their organisations. This approach not only safeguards user trust but also mitigates potential risks and legal challenges in the future.
3. The Role of Regulation and Governance: Chris pointed out the need for robust regulations and governance frameworks to guide AI development and deployment. Ethical AI requires a multidisciplinary approach involving policymakers, industry experts, and the public. Establishing clear guidelines and standards helps ensure accountability and fairness while addressing ethical concerns related to bias, privacy, and algorithmic transparency.
4. Addressing Bias and Promoting Inclusivity: The panellists stressed the significance of addressing bias in AI algorithms and datasets.
