Funding for UK and African organisations to address AgriFood challenges in Africa
Funding is available for UK and African organisations to collaborate on research projects that address AgriFood challenges in Africa.
This funding comes from a €350 million initiative to boost Africa-Europe research collaborations, as part of the Horizon Europe funding programme.
Several funding calls will open on 28th October 2021. The calls will include topics such as EU-Africa collaboration to combat malnutrition, investigate the water-energy-food nexus, and model energy systems.

Eligibility criteria
UK
The UK is still able to access research and innovation funding through Horizon Europe. The European Commission has published a useful FAQ document answering key questions about UK applicants eligibility.
Africa
The calls here require consortia to include entities from African countries. Click here to see a list of eligible African countries (page 13).

Agro-ecological approaches in African agriculture systems
Consortia requirements:
- 3 independent legal entities from different Member or Horizon Europe Associated States.
- Plus consortia must include at least 8 independent legal entities established in Africa. The places of establishment of at least 5 of these legal entities must be in the same geographical region of Africa.
- Minimum Consortia 11 partners.
Overall budget: EUR 28.00M

AU-EU Combating all forms of malnutrition
Consortia requirements:
- 3 independent legal entities from different Member or Horizon Europe Associated States.
- Plus consortia must include at least 5 independent legal entities established in Africa. The places of establishment of these legal entities must cover at least 3 different specific regions in Africa
- Minimum Consortia 8 partners
Overall budget: EUR 11M
Expected budget per project: EUR 11M
