Solutions for critical raw materials
A network of experts to strengthen Europe's critical raw material strategy.
This programme is now in its third phase. Visit SCRREEN for further details.
At the core of our raw material reliance
Raw materials are crucial to Europe’s economy and essential to maintaining and improving our quality of life. Securing reliable and unhindered access to certain raw materials is a growing concern within the EU and across the globe.
Solutions for critical raw materials – a European expert network (SCRREEN) – is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme. Over a six-year period, Innovate UK Business Connect was a partner in the first two phases of European expert network that gathered expertise on primary and secondary resources; production, including exploration, mining, processing, recycling and refining; substitution of CRM; raw materials markets; future demand and supply; materials flows; socio-economic analysis. The partners also analysed and generated insights on strategic value chains and end-use sectors, including batteries, e-mobility, renewable energy, electronics, defence and aerospace.
Deliverables and impact
SCRREEN is building an expert network on CRMs through Europe. Innovate UK Business Connect led a number of work packages that produced reports and insights covering substitution and innovation potential; updated the EU’s CRM factsheets covering EU Demand; co-authored an Insights Paper into the anticipated growth in the EU Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) value chain and how it may impact CRM demand.
Innovate UK Business Connect also led the publication of the SCRREEN1 final output report, which highlights some of the work the partner completed on industry insights on critical raw material supply chain risks and solutions.
SCRREEN results
The SCRREEN project continues to develop a coordinated series of expert‑led reports designed to support strategic decision‑making around critical raw materials (CRMs). By bringing together specialists across its network, the project examines future demand trends, maps the full CRM value chain, and identifies key technological and policy gaps that may hinder innovation.
