Women in Innovation Award Winners 2022/23
The Women in Innovation Programme was launched in 2016 by Innovate UK with the overall aim of increasing gender equality in business-led innovation.
The annual competition from Innovate UK supports and celebrates remarkable women entrepreneurs and senior business leaders from any background and any UK nation or region, with the aim to help grow their innovation further.
This year, we are awarding 50 Women remarkable women entrepreneurs, which forms our largest cohort since the programme’s start. Selected from hundreds of applicants, the winners are tackling some of our most pressing environmental, economic and societal challenges. The range and scope of their ideas is truly impressive, including:
- Oxford Heartbeat built a powerful, 3D AI-led software system to make surgeries more predictable, safe and efficient
- TurboGaming developed a pedal-powered games controller to get you off the couch onto a bike to play some of your favourite Playstation and Xbox racing games
- Future Piano is revolutionising the design of Grand Pianos that fits in modern homes without compromising on sound while reducing the weight and carbon footprint by 60%
- Post Carbon Lab cultivates microorganisms to bio-manufacture pigments, colours, finishes and agents used in the fashion and textile industry from her own vertical farm – to make fashion more sustainable

"Each year I am blown away by the brilliant ideas and talent we uncover through our Women in Innovation programme. Despite these challenging economic times, this year’s winners have shown great leadership, passion and resilience in driving their innovations forward. Innovate UK will work alongside them now to ensure they have the resources and support required to grow and scale their businesses, while encouraging a new generation of women to get involved in innovation, pursue their ambitions and transform our economy and society.”
— Emily Nott, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Programmes, Innovate UK
"Backing the UK’s brilliant female scientists, innovators and entrepreneurs is just common sense. The wider a talent pool we can bring to bear on some of the biggest challenges facing the world today, the more solutions we will find, as proved by the inspiring innovations outlined today, from bionic arms for amputees to game-changing antibiotics. My congratulations to all 50 of this year’s winners. Pioneering ideas like theirs will open the door to everything from greater productivity to better healthcare, ultimately creating jobs and economic growth.”
— Michelle Donelan, Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary
“It is fantastic to see the UK Government providing funding and practical help to support women innovators who have so much potential to grow their businesses and be a force for change in their chosen industries. Huge congratulations to Lorna, Abbie and Beren on their achievements. I’m delighted that their talents have been recognised by this award for innovation. Their ideas are as diverse as they are ground-breaking, and will have a great impact beyond Wales’s borders."
— David TC Davies, Secretary of State for Wales
“It’s fantastic to see such strong representation from Scottish entrepreneurs among today’s winners. Entrepreneurship is a powerful vehicle for growing our economy – helping to create better-paid jobs and opportunity right across the country – whilst also helping to tackle some of our biggest societal challenges. Many congratulations to all the winners, and I look forward to seeing these concepts develop through the support they will now receive.”
— Malcolm Offord, UK Government Minister for Scotland
“Susan and Michelle should be incredibly proud of being named as two out of 50 winners of Innovate UK’s Women in Innovation Awards for using their personal experiences to develop and create solutions and benefiting the world around them. It’s fantastic to see such great ambition and innovation recognised, and it is important that we continue to encourage and reward ideas and skills like this, to inspire women not just from Northern Ireland, but from across the United Kingdom.”
— Chris Heaton-Harris, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland

Since its launch, the Women in Innovation programme has directly supported over 150 trailblazing women with a total funding of £7.6 million and convened a vibrant community of over 9,500 business leaders, ambassadors and allies. More broadly, we have seen the number of women applying for innovation funding grow by over 70% and more women than ever starting new businesses – around 20% of all new UK firms are now led by women.
After taking part in the programme, members of our previous cohorts have gone on to scale their businesses, launch new products, attract further investment and expand their teams.
