The growth of quantum activity in the UK, alongside the national drive to commercialise quantum science and technologies, has led to the development of a broad range of industrial and research capabilities.
In 2020 the Quantum Technology Innovation Network at Innovate UK Business Connect brought these capabilities together in an interactive, searchable, open access landscape map. In support of the £2.5bn national quantum strategy (released in 2023), the quantum team at Innovate UK Business Connect aims for this tool to serve as a key point of reference for UK quantum capabilities, helping users identify relevant contacts across academia and industry.
The map currently lists over 350 businesses, including technology developers, consultancies, end users, supply chain organisations, and innovation networks. It enables refined searches by capability, funded organisation, region, and funding entity type.
It also includes over 300 research groups based in UK universities and institutions, with links to their websites and summaries of research interests.
Research activity is largely concentrated within seven major national centres: the five Quantum Hubs, the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) and the Quantum Metrology Institute at the National Physical Laboratory. Other infrastructure facilities, including lab access and fabrication facilities, are also captured. Further information on UK quantum infrastructure is available in the Quantum Infrastructure Review.
In line with the Quantum Skills Taskforce Report, developing the next generation of quantum engineers and scientists is critical to accelerating adoption. To support this, the map includes over 32 active postgraduate training centres, spanning centres for doctoral training, doctoral programmes, and skills and training hubs.
We encourage feedback and will continue to update the tool. If you would like to contribute, please fill out this form.
