Virtual Study Group – The Water Sector Meets Mathematics
Developed on behalf of V-KEMS and supported by the KE Hub, Innovate UK is hosting this three-day virtual study group that aims to bring mathematical sciences and other disciplines together to address challenges involved in the water sector.
Overview
On a day-to-day basis the water sector faces many challenges some of which make striking media headlines because they appear to be simple to solve. However, look beneath the surface and glimpse a world of complexity involving legacy infrastructure, increasing demands, and the impact of climate change. Such complex challenges excite mathematicians, data scientists, and modellers keen to lend their skills and expertise to explore current, complex, issues that impact our society.
About the event
The event will bring together those working in mathematical and data sciences, modelling, water companies and associated organisations, to address three challenges faced by the water sector.
Details of the three challenges will be available in due course and are likely to include themes such as the provision of clean and unpolluted water in the face of extreme events such as flooding invoked by climate change.

Industrial Maths
Innovate UK Business Connect’s Industrial Maths team harnesses the power of mathematics to meet the needs of business, government and not-for-profit organisations, helping a wide range of sectors express problems and challenges in an accessible way. We also facilitate new partnerships with an extensive network of mathematical science practitioners and diverse institutions across the UK.
Water
The water sector impacts every person, business and industry type in the UK. We turn on the tap and expect clean water. We rely on the water infrastructure, the pipes, the sewerage treatment, the rapid fixing of leaks. And we expect environmental issues to be a cornerstone of the industry and its operations.
