Future Flight Fridays: Public trust - social science considerations
This session will explore some of the wider social concerns arising in relation to Future flight and think through the priorities we need to consider in order to realise the 2030 vision for future flight in the UK.
Future flight technologies are undergoing a pivotal moment with novel and innovative developments taking place in many different fields. However, there is still limited wider public or social awareness of the growing opportunities and potential benefits (including environmental and economic) offered by such technologies. Furthermore, we need to build a better understanding of public awareness, trust, and the wider social science issues, which are key to successfully developing inclusive, accessible, and affordable air mobility as part of our day-to-day lives.

This is not only an emergent area of technology, but also an emergent field of social study. We therefore urgently need to undertake research into how individuals, groups of users/non-users, stakeholders within the innovation ecosystem and wider publics perceive, may react to and ultimately adopt or reject these new technologies and forms of aviation.
Building a more comprehensive understanding of perceived socially desirable benefits, and conversely social negatives, of Future Flight is a vital aspect of any roadmap for implementation and adoption, to enable a strong positioning of UK industry in the global market, and to realise the full social, economic and environmental benefits of these technologies.
This session will explore some of the wider social concerns arising in relation to Future flight and think through the priorities we need to consider in order to realise the 2030 vision for future flight in the UK. This session will also outline ways in which the UKRI Future Flight Social Science Research Director and her team can work to support potential award holders in undertaking this vital public or social science research moving forward.
