KTN report provides extensive overview of carbon fibre industry

Posted on: 11/11/2016

A review of carbon fibres – a valuable and highly dynamic materials technology.

Carbon fibres are composed of at least 92% carbon and most commonly have a diameter in the range 5–10μm. They are polymers with a structure that is almost completely graphitic

A new report has been published offering an in-depth overview of the carbon fibre industry. Carbon Fibres: a Review of Technology and Current Market Trends was jointly produced by the Knowledge Transfer Network and TWI.

The report is intended to provide those with an interest in carbon fibres with an entry point to this valuable and highly dynamic materials technology, offering insight into key trends. Markets and economic considerations are discussed, followed by a review of physical properties and manufacturing technologies for carbon fibres.

According to the report, the main factors currently affecting the carbon fibre market are:

  • Continued expansion in the market, especially in sectors such as automotive.
  • A drive towards a more cost-effective, high quality fibre that is manufacturable in large volumes.
  • Sustainable carbon fibre sources, including renewable precursors and routes for recycling carbon fibres from composites.

KTN’s Head of Materials and Nanotechnology Robert Quarshie states:

“This review provides a top-level view of the markets for carbon fibres and identifies areas likely to experience high growth in the coming years. KTN is very pleased to have produced this report in collaboration with TWI, as it offers valuable insight to anyone who wishes to understand carbon fibre technology and trends.”
