HEL Performance strengthens resilience after Secure Innovation Security Review

Date posted: 10/12/2025

HEL Performance (Hose-Equip Limited), a Devon-based manufacturer of high-performance braking products, is a trusted supplier for world motorsport champions. For over 28 years, the company has delivered precision-engineered solutions, but when a cyber attack disrupted operations, Managing Director Simon Lane knew it was time to take security to the next level.

A wake-up call

From accounting systems to CNC programs and technical drawings, HEL’s servers hold the lifeblood of the business. But one Monday morning, the company was thrown into chaos.

“Every single document on our servers had been altered to a new extension. We couldn’t open anything. No invoicing, no machining, no sales—until we resolved it.” Simon Lane, Managing Director, HEL Performance.

Fortunately, HEL had backups and was able to recover. But the incident was a stark reminder of how even well-established businesses can be vulnerable. That’s when Simon’s Innovation and Growth Specialist, Giulia Pratico, suggested the Secure Innovation Security Review, delivered through Innovate UK.

“For a minimal cost, we could access matched funding and expert advice tailored to our business. It was a no-brainer.” Simon Lane.

Expert insight, tailored advice

HEL selected a security reviewer who brought deep cyber expertise and a pragmatic approach. Rather than offering generic advice, they took time to understand HEL’s operations, risks, and resources.

“They didn’t just tell us to invest millions in servers. They gave us structured, attainable recommendations based on our size and needs.”

One moment stood out: a story about a USB drive found in a car park—planted by an attacker hoping someone would plug it in at another company. The story worked. That example sparked immediate action at HEL.

“We sent an email to all staff: no external USBs on company PCs. It shifted our mindset from ‘it won’t happen to us’ to ‘what if it does?’”

From awareness to action

The review didn’t stop at cyber threats. It covered physical security too—CCTV positioning, door strength, access points. HEL realised they had considered fire escapes for getting out, but not for preventing unauthorised entry.

Since the review, HEL has:

  • Installed additional floodlights and CCTV
  • Enhanced software and online security
  • Fostered a company-wide culture of vigilance< /li>

“It’s not just about phishing emails anymore. It’s about protecting everything—from IP to infrastructure” Simon Lane.

A foundation for growth

Beyond security, the SISR has helped HEL mature as a business. Staff are more engaged, processes are reviewed quarterly, and there’s a renewed sense of confidence.

The review has also supported HEL’s development of stronger relationships with suppliers and clients, reinforcing trust and professionalism.

We feel safer, more empowered, and better equipped to protect what we’ve built over nearly three decades. It’s a small investment of time and money, but the return is tenfold. You get recognition for what’s working and guidance on what to improve. It’s invaluable.
