Innovate UK helps Envirovue clean up with sustainable waste growth

Date posted: 13/11/2025

Lancashire-based Envirovue is reshaping the waste management industry with a technology-led approach that reduces cost, waste and carbon emissions.

With tailored business growth support from Innovate UK, the company has secured a multi-million-pound contract with Southern Water, doubled annual revenues, won 40 new clients and created 12 new jobs.

Envirovue helps businesses manage waste more intelligently, using intuitive systems and artificial intelligence to track it, cut costs and show the carbon impact of their choices. Its platform brings together all the paperwork, compliance checks and carbon data that businesses usually have to manage separately, making waste management faster, more transparent and easier to control. Its fresh approach enables customers – from SMEs to major manufacturers and utilities – to make more carbon-efficient decisions and clearly track environmental benefits.

Daniel Redfern, Director at Envirovue, says: “Our goal has always been to show that waste management is not just a cost, but a way for businesses to cut spend and carbon at the same time. Last year alone, we identified more than £2 million in savings for our customers through landfill diversion and re-use strategies.”

Building the foundations for scalable growth

Envirovue first engaged with Innovate UK Business Growth in February 2023, following an introduction from the Lancashire Local Enterprise Partnership. As a fast-growing start-up, the company faced challenges around scaling operations, breaking into new sectors and navigating complex tendering processes.

Innovation and Growth Specialists, David Brayne and Alan Reid, worked closely with the leadership team to co-develop a tailored action plan. This prioritised embedding technology to enhance operational efficiency, protecting sensitive data and preparing Envirovue for larger commercial opportunities.

A key early milestone was securing an Innovate UK Business Growth Research and Technology Organisation (RTO) / Catapult grant that enabled Envirovue to work with the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). This helped it to embed AI-driven analytics into its platform, streamlining compliance reporting and strengthening its offer to major customers. To help protect data, Envirovue was advised to apply for a Secure Innovation Security Review, a funded initiative from HM government, that helped reinforce its cyber security infrastructure to safeguard sensitive compliance data.

Daniel explains: “These initiatives gave us a robust foundation at a crucial point. Embedding AI and strengthening our cyber resilience made our service far more scalable, which, in turn, positioned us to win larger contracts.”

Internationalisation and strengthening partnerships in the UK

As part of the action plan, Envirovue also looked beyond the UK to long-term international opportunities. With support from Innovate UK’s Global Explorers and Global Incubator Programme (GIP) in New York – delivered by Innovate UK Business Growth – the company gained its first foothold in the US. These initiatives enabled Envirovue to meet the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to understand regulatory processes and engage potential suppliers. While contracts are still in development, Envirovue expects to finalise US partnerships in the near future.

Daniel adds: “The chance to be on the ground in the United States was invaluable. It provided learning and contacts we couldn’t have achieved otherwise, and it has put us in a strong position for future contracts.”
Back in the UK, Envirovue also worked with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centres (AMRC) in Samlesbury, Lancashire and Broughton, Flintshire, following introductions made by the innovation and growth specialist. These connections enabled Envirovue to access manufacturing supply chains and demonstrate how its services can help businesses track and reduce the indirect emissions created across their operations – an area of growing importance as companies face increasing pressure to show environmental responsibility.

Alongside this, Envirovue has continued to scale safely and sustainably, without relying on debt or external equity. Innovate UK Business Growth provided expert advice on risk and opportunity, helping the company make confident decisions as it expanded. By combining consultancy with best-fit waste solutions, the company has built a strong platform for ambitious but organic growth.

Contract success fuels rapid growth trajectory

These building blocks helped Envirovue compete for – and secure – one of its biggest breakthroughs to date: part of a framework agreement with Southern Water. The four-year contract, valued at £550 million across the consortium and potentially worth £1.1 billion if extended, will see Envirovue manage waste streams across more than 365 wastewater treatment works and 89 water treatment sites.

To support delivery, Envirovue is opening a new premises on the south coast, creating additional jobs and expanding its operational footprint.

Sustainable impact for the UK economy and society

Since beginning its journey with Innovate UK Business Growth, Envirovue has grown its turnover by more than 25% annually and recorded a 98% year-on-year revenue increase in 2024/25. Its workforce has expanded more than four-fold and it continues to create high-value jobs throughout the UK.

The company’s innovations directly contribute to UK productivity by reducing waste and supporting circular economy principles. Its AI-driven document-checking tool, launched in 2024, is already helping businesses save thousands each year by automating the checking of Waste Transfer Notes – the legal documents required whenever waste changes hands.

Daniel concludes: “Envirovue’s story shows how a bold idea can be scaled with the right support. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far and excited to keep building sustainable solutions that support the UK’s net zero goals.”

Working with Innovate UK Business Growth helped us to think ahead about what investors look for – from demonstrating scalability to ensuring our intellectual property is protected.
