Young Innovator Success Stories: Breaking Barriers in Medical Education with AI Support

Date posted: 09/06/2025

Yusuf Ben-Tarifite founded The Aspiring Medics one week before starting his degree at Oxford University, inspired by his own challenging journey into the medical field.

Yusuf’s company, The Aspiring Medics, offers an online platform that provides students with resources and tools to help them pursue medicine. The goal is to offer equal opportunities to anyone, regardless of background.

“We want to raise awareness and actively work to remove barriers within medicine,” said Yusuf. “We can create a more inclusive and diverse medical profession.”

Scaling upwards

When Yusuf joined the Innovate UK Young Innovators programme, The Aspiring Medics was already building momentum, having amassed over 350,000 video views between its YouTube channel and website.

“The engagement we were getting highlighted the demand for accessible resources among aspiring medical students,” he explained.

Although the numbers were promising, Yusuf’s team was small, and the project was still in its infancy. It was at this stage that the Young Innovators programme provided vital support.

Achievements so far

Since then, The Aspiring Medics has achieved several significant milestones, including the launch of ‘AVA’ – an AI platform that offers 24/7 personalised support to students.

The Aspiring Medics has also been providing free courses to over 5,000 school students, many from underrepresented socioeconomic backgrounds. Collaborating with over 100 educational institutions and charities, Yusuf has identified and supported students in greatest need of these additional resources.

To date, The Aspiring Medics has raised £50,000 from grants and awards, with support from institutions Santander Universities and Oxford University’s Saïd Business School, alongside the Innovate UK Young Innovators programme.

Following the Young Innovators Award, Yusuf received the prestigious Diana Legacy Award 2024, presented by HRH The Prince of Wales.

“We were honoured with The Diana Award — the highest accolade a young person can achieve for social action or humanitarian efforts. The recognition not only validated our efforts but also raised awareness about the importance of educational equity.” said Yusuf.

Future ambitions and goals

In the coming year, The Aspiring Medics aim to expand its digital offerings and reach more students.

Yusuf expressed his desire to reach more students who may not have had access to resources previously. “We’re looking to further develop our online presence by engaging directly with communities through workshops, webinars, and collaborations with local organisations,” he explained.

Planned initiatives include new courses and resources tailored to every stage of the medical application process, with an emphasis on accessibility.

“We’re committed to continuing our advocacy for educational equity,” said Yusuf. “This involves not only providing resources but also engaging in conversations and initiatives that address disparities in medical education access.”

Developing new skills

Yusuf has grown both professionally and personally since joining the Young Innovators programme, and developed essential, transferable business skills.

My confidence in leadership has significantly developed,” said Yusuf.

I’ve also gained invaluable entrepreneurial skills; this project has provided me with practical experience in business strategy, financial engagement, and operational management.

Yusuf has also expanded his network connecting with like-minded peers and industry professionals.

“Thanks to the Innovate UK Young Innovators programme, I’ve also enhanced my networking abilities. I have built meaningful connections with mentors, peers, and industry professionals,” he explained. “These relationships have enriched my perspective and opened new doors.”

Advice and learnings

Yusuf’s advice applies to any aspiring innovator – success comes down to your approach and willingness to get stuck in.

“You get out what you put in! There are so many training sessions, workshops and mentorship opportunities,” he says. “It’s important to practise and apply the knowledge you’ll learn throughout the Young Innovators programme.”

“Staying mission-focused is essential. It’s easy to become side-tracked by new ideas or opportunities, but maintaining a clear focus will help in making strategic choices that drive your project forward,” Yusuf concluded.

“Ask others for help, learn from your mistakes, and with time, you will get there!”
