Packaging 2050: The Future Material Requirements of the Packaging Industry
Innovate UK KTN, Innovate UK, Oakdene Hollins and Valpak invite you to watch the recording of our online industry event on the 24th of March where the outputs of this project were presented and discussed.
What might packaging material demand look like in the next 30 years?
Oakdene Hollins and Valpak have been commissioned by the UKRI Innovate UK Transforming Foundation Industries challenge to carry out research aimed at developing foresight into what material requirements the packaging industry might have in the next 30 years.
Webinar recording is now available
In Innovate UK KTN, Innovate UK and Oakdene Hollins and Valpak’s online industry event on the 24th of March, the outputs of this project were presented and discussed.
Our cross-sector discussion gives insight into what the alternate 2050 future scenarios might look like as well as the potential challenges and opportunities which might be faced. There was also an opportunity to network and meet with industry and institutions online.
What is the relevance of this research?
The Transforming Foundation Industries challenge is supporting the development of innovative technology to reduce energy and resource use within the foundation industries – which include the cement, glass, ceramics, paper, metals and bulk chemicals sectors. Read more about the challenge here.
Long investment cycles mean that many companies in these sectors are planning facilities that could be in operation for 30 years. But the need to reduce carbon emissions and improve resource efficiency are impacting not just the foundation industries, but also their customers.
This research will enable the foundation industries to better understand:
- Market opportunities and threats
- The possible impact of disruptive products or business models
- Their short and medium term research needs
We are particularly interested in understanding the impact of:
- Changes in your client or customer requirements
- Major policy drivers, in particular the reduction of carbon emissions
- Possible regulatory requirements
- Advances in materials technology and product design
