How to safely deconstruct a battery

WMG, in its role as the APC Electrical Energy Storage Spoke, has produced a video demonstrating best practice for safely deconstructing batteries.

WMG at the University of Warwick, with its world-class expertise in manufacturing, innovation and technology, hosts the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) Spoke for Electrical Energy Storage.

In a new video, WMG experts demonstrate¬†a best practice guide for safely deconstructing batteries. They caution that “This demonstration was undertaken using specialist equipment and facilities in the WMG Energy Innovation Centre and should not be carried out by unqualified practitioners ‚Äì batteries can be hazardous!”

The video is filmed in their innovative forensic laboratory, which is designed to help them safely deconstruct and understand route failure modes within lithium ion batteries. The scientists explain how they work on battery chemistry all the way to scale-up in the laboratory – from coin-sized batteries to electric car batteries such as the cylindrical batteries of the type found in the Tesla and the pouch cells found in the Nissan Leaf.
