KTN nominated as finalist for environmental impact award in maritime
KTN has been recognised for our collaboration programmes Innovation Exchange (iX), which matches challenge holders with solution providers, and Innovation Networks, which convene the brightest minds to drive forward technology and innovation.
KTN has been selected as a finalist at the 7th annual Mersey Maritime Industry Awards (MMIA21), which acknowledges and celebrates the very best of the UK’s maritime industry and are widely recognised as being the leading regional maritime awards in the UK. The award ceremony will be held in Liverpool on 17th September 2021.
KTN was nominated for its commitment to meeting the UK’s targets for reaching Net Zero, through delivery of over 25 projects focussed on decarbonisation and sustainability. This includes Innovation Networks, which unite some of the best minds and greatest thinkers from across the UK in areas of innovation, development and new technologies. KTN has three that tackle challenges faced by the maritime sector: Cross Sector Battery Systems which builds on the work KTN delivered around the Faraday Challenge and is focused on driving battery solutions into defence, maritime and rail; Hydrogen Economy looking at storage, distribution and end user solutions and Decarbonising Ports & Harbours, which has attracted 1,000 interested stakeholders promoting the technical challenge and environmental need to reduce emissions from UK ports and harbours.
Another programme helping to transform the maritime sector is KTN’s iX – specially designed to help organisations search for game-changing solutions to challenges and bring them to market faster. This year, standout challenges from the maritime sector included: provision of next generation battery systems to power an e-foiler vessel for Artemis Technologies, provision of zero emission power to cruise ships in the middle of the Tidal Thames for the Port of London Authority; and 2 challenges for members of our Decarbonising Ports & Harbours Innovation Network identifying solutions for stranded diesel assets and efficient cable, and energy management of shore-side power.
iX has seen over 1.7k application entries across 80 challenges, 289 UK companies pitched their ideas, 87 trials were undertaken generating £17.16m value to challenge holders, and 20 commercial contracts were put in place, valued at £2.165m, as a direct result of iX.
Matthew Moss, Knowledge Transfer Manager for Maritime at KTN said:
“It’s great to see KTN recognised as a finalist at these awards. KTN is committed to supporting innovative businesses to decarbonise, reduce waste, increase energy efficiency, and build resilient, low carbon supply chains.”
“We’re working hard to convene key stakeholders and industry to drive innovation towards a cleaner maritime sector. Alongside our iX and Innovations Networks programmes, we’ve played a major role in delivering the £20m Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, and encouraging collaboration to achieve the aims of Maritime 2050.”
