Presentations from Positioning, Navigation and Timing event now available

The event included talks on threats and needs, and on technical details and capabilities of the Satellite Timing and Location and eLoran systems.

“We must take steps to increase the resilience of our critical services in the event of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) disruption, including by adopting potential back-up systems where necessary” – so says the recently published Blackett Review on satellite derived time and position. The recent London Economics report on the economic impact of a 5-day loss of satellite-derived time and position put the cost to the UK at over £5bn.

KTN held an event in June with the Royal Institute of Navigation and the General Lighthouse Authorities focusing on two potential backups to current satellite navigation – the low-frequency high-power eLoran terrestrial system, and a new system using re-purposed signals from existing Iridium low earth orbit satellites (Satellite Time and Location or STL).

Both were referenced on the recently published reports, and the event provided an opportunity for potential users to learn more from the organisations looking to provide these services.
