On 9 March 2022, Sheilah Birgen, Kenya Country Lead for our Global Alliance Africa project, briefed Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, the President of Zimbabwe, on Innovate UK KTN’s work in Kenya and how we are supporting small business and local and regional innovation across a range of sectors to promote long-lasting strategic partnerships between Africa and the UK.

The state visit, joined by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs, Joseph Mucheru, saw Kenya forge bilateral agreements expected to boost investments and development in both countries. President Mnangagwa said the agreements will enable Kenya and Zimbabwe to cooperate in addressing challenges facing them, particularly youth unemployment.

Commenting on the meeting, Sheilah said,

I was delighted to have the opportunity to speak to HE President Mnangagwa to highlight Global Alliance Africa’s project partnerships with local Kenyan innovation hubs and local government, and our focus on developing wider networks in Kenya. I was able to discuss our Eldoret programmes to nurture regional innovation ecosystems beyond Nairobi, and I’m excited to see how we can start to build out our networks between Kenya and Zimbabwe over the next year.”

The Global Alliance Africa project is a six-year project funded by UK Aid through Innovate UK (GCRF) and FCDO.
