The Brazil Energy Programme (BEP) grant competition for British and international companies is now open. The competition invites companies to apply to participate in grant-funded demonstration projects of innovative low carbon technologies in Brazil.
BEP is a 3-year programme (to March 2023) funded by the UK Government’s Prosperity Fund. It is delivered in partnership with the Government of Brazil, Brazilian energy industries and multiple local stakeholders involved in preparing for progress by fine-tuning policies and regulations to promote renewable energies.
Brazil has enormous potential to be a global leader in renewable energies that deliver social impact. The Brazil Energy Programme – BEP – provides UK funding and international expertise to support Brazil’s emergence as a renewable energy powerhouse. BEP will accelerate Brazil’s transition to sustainable, clean energy that can give disadvantaged parts of society more control over the source and cost of the energy they use. BEP will demonstrate innovative technologies through pilot projects implemented by Brazilian and international companies. And BEP will help Brazil prepare for progress by adapting policy and regulations to promote the use of clean energy technologies.

This competition, launched on 17th August 2020, is for British and international companies to participate in the first round of grant-funded demonstration projects of innovative low-carbon technologies in Brazil.
The first competition is for three pilot projects to demonstrate solar power, storage, and home energy management technology in Brazil. Approximately £3m in grant funding will be awarded in this round.
Pilot 1, the Pilar Solar pilot, involves the installation of photovoltaic panels, batteries and smart monitoring systems to provide energy to low income families in a community in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. The project involves strong community engagement and will be undertaken in association with a local utility.
Pilots 2 and 3 will demonstrate solar, storage and smart grid technology that can be scaled up and that can address specific challenges of the Brazilian social and market environment. Further details on pilots 2 & 3 will be available at the next stage of the application.
The Brazil Energy Programme offers technical and commercial incubation support to all grant recipients to enter a new and exciting growth market.
