The innovation landscape in East of England
As the UK’s innovation system, we work across the country. We also know that each part of the country is unique with its own strengths and challenges. We are committed to working closely with partners and regional initiatives to ensure you get what you need to innovate and succeed.
The region stretches from the borders of London to the East Coast of England, and has the highest business spend on R&D per capita in the UK. The East of England is a world leader of innovation in clean energy, biotech, digital connectivity, with an advanced manufacturing and engineering cluster. Cambridge is internationally renowned, and other places in the East, such as Norwich Research Park, Adastral Park (in Ipswich) and Orbis Energy (Lowestoft) are leading the creation of new technologies and driving innovation in a region with a GVA of 153bn.
Felixstowe is within the world’s top 50 largest container ports and connects major shipping lanes linking over 190 countries worldwide. It serves EU markets through regular services and with the biggest intermodal rail freight facility in the UK connecting innovation to worldwide markets.
We have partnered with New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership to develop a Local Action Plan for the region to cultivate strategic partnerships and boost innovation clusters.

Co-created with the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership to strengthen UK capability
Norfolk and Suffolk are poised for innovation and progress through Innovate UK’s forward-looking New Anglia Action Plan. By connecting regional strengths in agritech, biotech, clean energy, and digital, and by aligning resources to build on local insights and capabilities, the region will inspire more entrepreneurs, catalyse impact through strategic partnerships, and grow a thriving innovation ecosystem. Launchpads programme
To build on the strengths across Eastern England, we have the Agri Tech and Food Tech Launchpad. Innovate UK is partnering on this Launchpad with Norfolk County Council, Suffolk County Council and the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority in the East of England, as well as with the Greater Lincolnshire LEP in the East Midlands to boost this innovation cluster. Net Zero Adopt and Accelerate
We provide support for local and regional organisations, businesses, and innovations across the UK, to identify ecosystem level opportunities. We facilitate connections and collaborations that support uptake of Net Zero solutions, and encourage the creation of local innovation ecosystems building on regional strengths. By strengthening innovation communities in specific areas, we aim to create sustainable, localised solutions to address environmental challenges and drive economic growth nationwide.
