About the project

UK-registered Partner: University of Bedfordshire – Dr Tahmina Ajmal
Africa-registered Partner: Abagold Limited – Sarah Halse

Growth of the South African aquaculture industry is hindered by social and technological challenges. The aim of this collaboration is to support aquaculture community in South Africa Western Cape to address both challenges through employing digital technology and directed training for capacity building.

Our collaborating partner, Abagold Limited, is one of the largest Abalone farms in the region and collaboration mainly focuses on improving the aquaculture productivity in the region. The farms in the region face various challenges but a significant technical challenge is to deal with harmful algal blooms (HAB).

This project has seen deployment of in-situ sensors in the farm and development of a harmful algal bloom (HAB) prediction framework. In addition, training and capacity building workshop was arranged in February 2023 with an aim to empower the aquaculture community to develop innovative ideas to bring about sustainable changes in their respective farms.
