Design Unit, National Gear Metrology Lab (NGML), at Newcastle University has been providing Mechanical Power Transmission design, development and consultancy services to industrial engineering customers in the UK and worldwide since 1970. We are based within Newcastle University’s School of Engineering.

Our Engineers and Technicians provide expertise in transmission design and development, gear stress analysis and design, gear material, coatings and lubricant performance testing, gear measurement and calibration, test rig development, transmission efficiency and performance testing. The National Gear Metrology Lab, within Design Unit is part of the UK National Measurement System.

Our CMM measurement, material characterisation, manufacturing facilities and testing expertise have been applied to many different applications as part of the Innovate UK Analysis for Innovators projects. We don’t just work in the power transmission sector.
