Smarter delivery for remote communities in Argyll & Bute
Argyll and Bute’s 70 inhabited islands and rugged terrain make deliveries slow, costly and carbon intensive.
The IONA Drone Delivery Initiative, led by IONA Logistics with Argyll and Bute Council, is trialling a cleaner, faster alternative. Its drones carry up to 20 kilograms and fly at 100 kilometres per hour. Even in remote areas, this enables same-hour delivery for time-sensitive freight like chilled goods or medical supplies.
What sets the system apart is its simplicity. The drones observe and optimise as they fly. Combined with vertical take-off, routing software and cargo-handling robotics, this means delivery providers do not need specialist pilots or new systems. It integrates directly with existing logistics platforms.
Each flight cuts van mileage, lowers delivery costs and improves access. The approach offers a practical model for cleaner, more reliable freight in hard-to-reach places across the UK.
