Procurement that benefits local SMEs

Lead Organisation

Dorset Council helps local SMEs benefit from its Net Zero procurement.

Dorset Council is turning climate action into a catalyst for better services, stronger local economies and smarter public spending. Recognising that the majority of its emissions and spending lies in supply chains, the council is leading a public sector partnership to co-develop a Net Zero Procurement Toolkit.

This shared approach reduces duplication, aligns spend with goals like job creation and cost savings, and provides clearer, more consistent expectations for suppliers looking to do business with the public sector. By embedding climate considerations across commissioning, procurement and contract management, the toolkit also makes it easier for local SMEs to compete and win work.

This support comes at a critical moment. In 2024, Dorset Council approved a further £6 million for climate action, bringing total investment to £25 million and accelerating its carbon neutral target to 2035. With more money going into net zero delivery, Dorset is ensuring local businesses are ready to benefit.
