Leicestershire CAN: using grants to stimulate projects that deliver local jobs, skills and investment
Leicestershire CAN (Collaborate to Accelerate Net Zero) is showing how places with fewer resources can still deliver climate action that creates jobs, supports communities and attracts investment.
Leicestershire County Council, with partners such as Energy Systems Catapult, National Grid, Green Fox, Community Energy South, De Montfort University and University of Leicester, are testing joined-up approaches to energy planning, governance and delivery.
Over £130,000 in grants has been awarded to community organisations, solar has been supported in 116 schools, and a new service launched to help local businesses cut emissions. Universities are helping test long-term governance models to scale impact.
These efforts are building local confidence and value. Project lead Michael Suddens was recognised in Edie’s 30 Under 30 for his role.
As a Net Zero Living Demonstrator, the project is already sharing learnings to support local authorities across the UK.
