Using climate data to drive investment, improve services and strengthen citywide collaboration in Southampton
Southampton City Council is building the partnerships and tools needed to make Net Zero a catalyst for wider transformation.
Working with Nquiringminds and the University of Southampton, the council has developed the Green City Tracker — a tool that enables major institutions and businesses, including the NHS, port and universities, to baseline and share emissions. It gives a citywide view of progress, helping coordinate investment and action.
This approach is strengthening collaboration on shared infrastructure like district heating, grid upgrades and renewables. It’s also deepening ties with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), the regional electricity distributor, with directors from both organisations now meeting regularly to agree shared priorities.
By connecting data, decisions and delivery, Southampton is showing how shared climate goals can improve services, attract investment and build stronger partnerships across the city.
