Connecting innovators with academic expertise

Amanda MacCannell is the founder of Leeds-based Pathways Open, an AI-driven platform that connects life-science companies with academic expertise to accelerate innovation. Originally from Canada, she discovered through her international research career how the disconnect between academia and industry often prevents groundbreaking discoveries from reaching those who could apply them.

Startups bring passion and drive for bold changes, while academics possess expertise to accelerate ideas – but connecting them remains challenging. Inspired by COVID-19’s unprecedented scientific collaboration, Pathways Open’s AI matching algorithm enables partnerships that transform ground-breaking research into impactful solutions. This addresses key innovation pain points including lack of access to specialised expertise and high costs.

“We believe that breaking down barriers between academia and industry is the key to unlocking innovation and creating impactful solutions that benefit society,” says Amanda.

Amanda’s achievements include securing funding from the Open Collaborations initiative at Hartree Northeast Hub and winning an Innovate UK Begin Award.

“Being recognised as a Women in Innovation Award winner is a powerful validation of the vision behind Pathways Open,” says Amanda. “It’s inspiring to be part of a community of talented women pushing boundaries in their fields.” Through the programme, she aims to connect with innovators and supporters who share her vision of transforming collaboration in the life sciences.

“One of the biggest barriers I’ve had to overcome is being underestimated in high-level discussions, especially in biotech and academia,” Amanda reflects. “The key has been building a network of allies, mentors, and advocates who supported and validated my contributions.”

Her advice to aspiring innovators? “You don’t need to know everything – you can learn as you build. Surround yourself with people who challenge and support you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
