Breaking down digital barriers through AI-powered audio
Binhui Shao is the founder of Easy Digital Ltd, an East Midlands-based company creating innovative digital solutions for visually impaired individuals. With a PhD in Educational Technology and over 10 years of entrepreneurial experience, Binhui combines technological expertise with a commitment to social impact.
Many visually impaired and elderly people face significant barriers to accessing online content, leading to social isolation and loneliness. Easy Digital’s Internet Hub tackles this challenge through an AI-powered audio device that provides seamless internet access without requiring sight or advanced technical skills. The innovative system is highly intuitive as it uses a large language model that understands and learns user behaviour.
“My mission is to harness the power of technology to bridge gaps and create inclusive, innovative solutions that empower individuals, especially those with visual impairments, to live more connected and fulfilling lives,” says Binhui.
Her achievements include securing support from Microsoft’s Startups Founders programme, which provided $150,000 in cloud computing and AI credits. Binhui has also built strong relationships with key organisations such as Talking Newspapers and British Wireless for the Blind.
“Winning the Women in Innovation Award is an incredibly gratifying and empowering experience,” says Binhui. Through the programme, she aims to drive the development and commercialisation of the Internet Hub while inspiring other women in the sector.
“One of the biggest barriers I have overcome is being taken seriously in a predominantly male-dominated field,” Binhui reflects. “I remained focused on my mission and leveraged my expertise, drive, and the support of the strong network I have built over time.”
Her advice to aspiring women innovators? “Remain persistent and resilient in the face of challenges. It’s important to believe in your vision and utilise both your unique insights and collective support networks to overcome barriers.”
