Improving the communication skills of autistic children through personalised game apps

Following a wide ranging career in engineering, sustainable development and broadcasting, Inas Ismail’s focus changed course again following the birth of her child.

“I started Autsera because I was feeling lost trying to get timely and effective support for my child – a sentiment echoed by most parents of special needs children in the UK. I want to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of autistic and special needs children, and millions of parents and carers.”

Autsera combines technology, gamification, and user-centred design to build personalised game apps that help children with special needs develop their social and communication skills.

Inas believes that technology, which is often presented as a negative force in the lives of children and young people, can be focussed for positive change.

“Technologies such as speech recognition and machine learning can provide accessible, effective, and personalised support to children, which can help them overcome their struggles, gain confidence, and become more independent socially.”

She wants to use the Innovate UK Women in Innovation Award to help expand the company into upstream diagnostics and enter the digital healthcare sector, developing a prototype for a product in high demand.
